Facebook says attackers stole details from 29 million users

Image
Facebook Inc said on Friday it had confirmed that the attackers in the mass security breach it announced late last month accessed the accounts of about 30 million people in total and stole name and contact details for 29 million. Facebook Inc said in late September that hackers stole digital login codes allowing them to take over nearly 50 million user accounts in its worst security breach ever, but did not confirm if information had actually been stolen. The company said that for 15 million people, attackers accessed two sets of information – name and contact details including phone number, email, or both, depending on what the individuals had on their profiles. For another 14 million people, the attackers also accessed other details included username, gender, locale/language, relationship status, religion, hometown, current city, birth date, devices used to access Facebook, education, work, and the last 10 places they checked into or were tagged in. “We’re ...

Space crew survives plunge to Earth after Russian rocket fails

Image
BAIKONUR COSMODROME, Kazakhstan: The two-man U.S.-Russian crew of a Soyuz spacecraft en route to the International Space Station was forced to make a dramatic emergency landing in Kazakhstan on Thursday when their rocket failed in mid-air. U.S. astronaut Nick Hague and Russian cosmonaut Alexei Ovchinin landed safely without harm and rescue crews who raced to locate them on the Kazakh steppe quickly linked up with them, NASA, the U.S. space agency, and Russia’s Roscosmos said. It was the first serious launch problem experienced by a manned Soyuz space mission since 1983 when a fire broke out at the base of the booster rocket while the crew was preparing for lift-off. The crew narrowly escaped before a large explosion. Thursday’s problem occurred when the first and second stages of a booster rocket, launched from the Soviet-era cosmodrome of Baikonur in the central Asian country, were separating, triggering emergency systems soon after launch. The Soyuz capsule carry...

Microsoft expands cloud service in push for $10 billion Pentagon contract

Image
Microsoft Corp said on Tuesday its expanded Azure cloud service to help government clients save data on their own servers would be available by the end of the first quarter of 2019, as it battles with Amazon for a $10 billion Pentagon contract. The two companies are left in the fray for the lucrative contract after Alphabet Inc’s Google dropped out on Monday, saying the company’s new ethical guidelines do not align with the project. Pentagon’s JEDI, or Joint Enterprise Defense Infrastructure, cloud computing solution contract is part of the Department of Defense’s efforts to modernize its IT infrastructure. The expanded Azure Government Secret cloud service will make Microsoft “a strong option for the JEDI contract,” said Julia White, corporate vice president of Microsoft Azure, adding that the company is capable of meeting the highest classification requirement for handling “top secret U.S. classified data”.

Google challenges Apple with new Pixel 3 phone

SAN FRANCISCO: Alphabet Inc’s Google on Tuesday unveiled the third edition of its Pixel smartphone, a Google Home smart speaker with a display and its first tablet computer as it makes a come-from-behind push into hardware. Google launches connected speaker with screen! The company’s Android software has gone from being an also-ran to the brains of most of the world’s smartphones and Google topped Amazon.com Inc in smart speaker sales in recent quarters. Pixel phones, though, have been a tougher sell, launching with glitches and garnering less than 1 percent of the global market by shipments in Google’s first two years of trying, according to research firm Strategy Analytics. YouTube driving global consumption of music The Pixel 3, priced at $799, and a larger Pixel 3 XL, priced at $899, mark Google’s latest entries for a phone lineup it hopes will someday be as ...

Facebook launches AI video-calling device 'Portal'

Image
London- Facebook on Monday launched a range of AI-powered video-calling devices, a strategic revolution for the social network giant which is aiming for a slice of the smart speaker market that is currently dominated by Amazon and Google. "It´s been a big shift for the company," Facebook´s vice president of consumer hardware Andrew Bosworth told AFP before the launch of "Portal". "We´ve seen a rise of video calling, on both Messenger and WhatsApp -- it has been a tremendous trend," he said. But the launch of a product putting a camera into people´s homes is likely to raise privacy issues for the social media giant, which has suffered several major data breaches this year involving tens of millions of user accounts. The device, which will be available for pre-order in the United States from Monday, is designed to allow users to make video calls at home without having to stand immediately in front of the screen or hold a phone at arm...

NASA spots dust-covered Mars rover that has yet to send signal

Image
NASA’s Mars rover has still not sent any signal to Earth after the dust storm subsided, but it still can now be seen from up above. After the massive dust storm cleared out, NASA’s Opportunity rover on Mars didn’t wake up. However, it has recently been spotted by Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (MRO) from up above, totally covered by dust. With the help of its HiRise camera, the MRO found the rover that is currently in an area called Perseverance Valley. In the picture captured on September 20 about 267km above Mars’ surface, the rover looks like a tiny, pale spot, reported Daily Mail. NASA’s Mars rover captures stunning picture under dusty Martian skies NASA stated, “A key unknown is how much dust has fallen on the solar arrays. The HiRise image shows some reddening of the surrounding area, suggesting dust fallout, but it is not possible to determine how much dust is on the arrays themselves.” The solar-powered rover went through a massive dust storm...

Scientists create self-powered heart monitor that can be fixed into skin

Image
Scientists have created a new human-friendly, self-powered heart monitor that can easily be taped to the skin and take measurements from the outside. Riken Institute’s scientists have discovered an innovative ultra-flexible, human-friendly organic sensor that is powered by sunlight and functions as a self-powered heart monitor. A sensory device is called an organic electrochemical transistor, which measure a variety of biological functions and was integrated into a flexible organic solar cell. This self-powered device is able to fit directly on human skin or tissue and such devices have a range of biological functions. Researchers develop glue that seals wounds in seconds In the first experiment, the researchers used the new device to monitor heartbeats of rats. In the second experiment, the device was used to access human heartbeat successfully, under bright light conditions. The trials showed that the device is appropriate for medical applications, such as ...
