Twitter to offer users option to go back to ‘chronological’ feed

Image
Washington: Twitter is preparing an option for users to go back to its original chronological news feed, responding to complaints about its algorithmic system implemented two years ago. In a series of tweets late Monday, Twitter told users it was "working on new ways to give you more control over your timeline." The short-message social network said it still believes most users will want to see the "best" tweets at the top of their feed but will allow people to switch based on their preference. "We´ve learned that when showing the best tweets first, people find Twitter more relevant and useful," the San Francisco company said. "However, we´ve heard feedback from people who at times prefer to see the most recent tweets." After years of operating with a chronological timeline, Twitter began in 2016 to follow the lead of Facebook in using algorithms to offer what it deemed to be the most relevant messages for users as ...

Alibaba´s Ma says 1m US jobs pledge thwarted by trade row

Image
HONG KONG: Alibaba founder Jack Ma said his ambitious pledge to create one million jobs in the US had been scuppered by the trade row between Beijing and Washington, Chinese state news reported Thursday. The billionaire owner of China´s largest online shopping portal made the headline-grabbing promise to Donald Trump last year, as Beijing courted the then-newly elected president. But Ma told Xinhua that his pledge had been made on the basis of continued cooperation and trade growth between the US and China, and would now be difficult to fulfill. "However, the previous basis for trade has been undermined," he said in an interview on Tuesday. "But we will continue to work hard to promote the healthy development of China-US trade." Ma´s bold pledge following his January 2017 meeting at Trump Tower was greeted with scepticism by analysts at the time, who said the move was more about good PR than substance. One million jobs would be close...

Facebook accused of discrimination with job ad targeting

Image
Washington: A complaint has been filed with the US government accusing Facebook and 10 other companies of using the platform´s job ad targeting system to discriminate on the basis of gender. The complaint was announced Tuesday by the American Civil Liberties Union, a union called the Communications Workers of America and a labor law firm, on behalf of three female job seekers and a group of "thousands" of members represented by the union. It charges that job ads on Facebook targeted male users only. It also alleges that most of the listings were for jobs in male-dominated fields, so women and non-binary users were excluded from seeing these ads. Facebook lets advertisers target ads on the basis of gender and age, which is against the law in America, the complaint reads. "I shouldn´t be shut out of the chance to hear about a job opportunity just because I am a woman," said Bobbi Spees, one of the three women named in the complaint. Face...
