200-million year old Pterosaur built for flying

Image
Paris: Scientists on Monday unveiled a previously unknown species of giant pterosaur, the first creatures with a backbone to fly under their own power. Neither dino nor bird, pterosaurs -- more commonly known as pterodactyls -- emerged during the late Triassic period more than 200 million years ago and lorded over primeval skies until a massive space rock slammed into Earth, wiping out land-dwelling dinosaurs and most other forms of life more than 65 million years ago. The newly discovered member of the family, identified through remains found in northeastern Utah, had a wing-span of 1.5 metres (five feet) and 112 teeth, including fang-like spikes sticking out near the snout. A jutting lower jaw suggests a pelican-like pouch, perhaps to scoop up fish and unsuspecting small reptiles. "They are delicately framed animals that are built for flying," said Brooks Britt, a paleontologist at Brigham Young University in Utah and lead author of a study in Natur...

NASA blasts off historic Parker Solar Probe to Touch SUN

Image
Tampa: NASA on Sunday blasted off a $1.5 billion spacecraft toward the Sun on a historic mission to protect the Earth by unveiling the mysteries of dangerous solar storms. "Three, two, one, and liftoff!" said a NASA commentator as the Parker Solar Probe lit up the dark night sky aboard a Delta IV-Heavy rocket from Cape Canaveral, Florida at 3:31 am (0731 GMT). The unmanned spacecraft aims to get closer than any human-made object in history to the center of our solar system. The probe is designed to plunge into the Sun’s atmosphere, known as the corona, during a seven-year mission. It is protected by an ultra-powerful heat shield that can endure unprecedented levels of heat, and radiation 500 times that experienced on Earth. NASA has billed the mission as the first spacecraft to "touch the Sun." In reality, it should come within 3.83 million miles (6.16 million kilometers) of the Sun’s surface, close enough to study the curious phenomen...

PTI man who defeated Shahbaz Sharif from Swat was confident of victory

Image
PESHAWAR: Pakistan's Tehreek-e-Insaf's Saleem Rehman who defeated Shahbaz Sharif in the contest for a National Assembly constituency in Swat said he was confident of victory as he knew the Swatis normally don't vote for outsiders in the election. "I wasn't worried at all that the PML-N has fielded Shahbaz Sharif in my constituency, NA-3 Swat. Rather I was happy because I was aware voters in Swat would vote for me instead of him. Also, I thought even if I lost I will lose to Shahbaz Sharif and not someone unknown," he remarked. Saleem Rehman argued that neither Shahbaz Sharif nor Billawal Bhutto Zardari, who was defeated by PTI's Junaid Akbar from the adjacent constituency, NA-8 Malakand, had done anything for the people of Swat and Malakand and the voters had no reason to vote for them. "How can we forget that Shahbaz Sharif as chief minister of Punjab stopped the internally displaced persons from Swat after the 2009 military operation ...

Researchers find flaw in WhatsApp

Image
PARIS: Researchers at an Israeli cybersecurity firm said on Wednesday they had found a flaw in WhatsApp that could allow hackers to modify and send fake messages in the popular social messaging app. CheckPoint said the vulnerability gives a hacker the possibility “to intercept and manipulate messages sent by those in a group or private conversation” as well as “create and spread misinformation”. Last month, the app announced limits of forwarding messages following threats by the Indian government to take action after more than 20 people were butchered by crazed mobs after being accused of child kidnapping and other crimes in viral messages circulated wildly on WhatsApp. WhatsApp said in a statement: “We carefully reviewed this issue and it’s the equivalent of altering an email to make it look like something a person never wrote.” However, WhatsApp said: “This claim has nothing to do with the security of end-to-end encryption, which ensures only the sender and recip...
